A mid-Holocene transition in the nitrogen dynamics of the western equatorial Pacific: Evidence of a deepening thermocline? ArchiMer
Kienast, M.; Lehmann, M. F.; Timmermann, A.; Galbraith, E.; Bolliet, T.; Holboum, A.; Normandeau, C.; Laj, C..
Sedimentary delta(15)N records from the oligotrophic western equatorial Pacific (WEP) off Mindanao show that late Holocene sedimentary delta(15)N is substantially lower than that of the early Holocene, following a gradual >3 parts per thousand decrease that occurred between 7 and 3 kyrs ago. Analyses of modem day nitrate isotope profiles from the same region indicate the sensitivity of the WEP N pools towards (1) the advection of (15)N-enriched nitrate from the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) by the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and the Mindanao Current in subsurface waters and, (2) at shallow depths, the input of new and (15)N-depleted nitrate through N, fixation. We suggest that the Holocene decrease in sedimentary delta(15)N reflects a diminished...

An automated photo-oxidation method for the determination of dissolved organic phosphorus in marine and fresh water ArchiMer
Aminot, Alain; Kerouel, Roger.
A segmented flow automated method with on-line photo-oxidation for the determination of dissolved organic phosphorus + soluble reactive phosphorus (DOP + SRP) in seawater and fresh water is described here. A low-power lamp was used for a compact, easy-to-handle and low-ozone-producing manifold. The influence of seawater matrix components was studied in detail using natural seawater and salt solutions spiked with DOP model compounds. Bromide was found to be the most inhibitory species in seawater. The work shows that most salt solutions referred to as artificial seawater are not satisfactory model matrices to test the actual seawater matrix effect. Since DOP recovered in undiluted seawater samples was about half that obtained in fresh water samples, the...

Description of a new species of Ituglanis (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae) from Serra dos Carajás, rio Tocantins basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Wosiacki,Wolmar B.; Dutra,Guilherme M.; Mendonça,Marina B.
A new species of Ituglanis is described from the rio Tocantins basin, State of Pará, Brazil. Ituglanis ina, new species, is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of a dark vertical bar over the base of the caudal-fin rays (vs. no bars over caudal-fin base); and by the presence of a middle trunk line of tiny neuromasts extending along the flank until the vertical through the dorsal fin, or near the caudal-fin base (vs. no middle trunk line of tiny neuromasts). Ituglanis ina can be further distinguished by a combination of characters related to color pattern and morphology. Comments on the relationship between Ituglanis species are presented.

Donnees sur les gasteropodes dulcicoles de l'ouest de la France: Mise en evidence de cinq groupes d'especes (ACP) ArchiMer
Costil, F.
24 Species of Gastropoda, representing 3357 specimens, have been sampled in 57 varied ponds of Brittany (France). The most frequent species (at least in 10% of the samples) are considered according to their average abundance and dominance. The average specific richness of the ponds where the species have been collected is studied. In a second stage, the Gastropoda are analysed by means of a principal component analysis. The 1-2 plane correspond to 87% of the whole variance. This analysis associated with a cluster analysis led to the partition of 5 groups of species.

Evaluación de la contaminación de la Presa Ejército Rebelde, Ciudad de La Habana, Cuba, mediante el empleo de protozoos como bioindicadores OceanDocs
Ymas González, I.; Revilla Alcázar, I.; Prieto Trueba, D..
Fresh water systems are very important to men. They are used to diferents things like drinking water to humans, recreational bath and fishing culture, because of that, a good water quality is necessary and depends on its uses. Besides pathogens and sewage waters, contamination by organic mater could be so bad, resulting in death of water bodies. This can extinguish the disolved oxigen, which is a vital element for the development of the organisms that live in that water bodies. To study the contamination in Ejercito Rebelde dam from October 2005 to January 2006, it was used the saprobic system and protozoans as bioindicators of organic matter contamination. Were identificated 59 species of protozoans, in which ciliates represented 74,5 % of especies’s...

Priorities for, and preferred approaches to, management of New Zealand fresh waters AgEcon
Hughey, Kenneth F.D.; Kerr, Geoffrey N.; Cullen, Ross; Shen, Fujun.
Since 2000 six standardised biennial public surveys of the state of the New Zealand environment have been undertaken. A fresh water case study was included in the 2010 postal survey and in an electronic survey. Desirable futures for New Zealand's fresh water resources, sources of damage to freshwater, preferred management approaches, and views about charges for commercial uses of water are reported. Respondents desire high quality water, are not prepared to trade that off for damaging economic gains, and support charges for commercial uses of water. We report public preferences for tools to manage water use.

Production and consumption of B group vitamins in situ. ArchiMer
Kurata, A.
The changes in concentration of thiamine, biotin and vitamin B sub(12) in water of the soaked bottles for 6 h in situ in the north basin of Lake Biwa were examined successively over 30 hours. The concentrations of the vitamins changed comparatively during 6 h. soaking in situ. Generally, the concentrations of thiamine, biotin and vitamin B sub(12) were in high levels in the morning and in low levels in evening both in the soaked bottles and in the surrounding water. The fluctuation ranges in concentration of vitamins in a 5 m deep layer were greater than those in thermocline. From the data obtained with the soaked bottles in situ, it was supposed that the decrease of vitamins in concentration during the daytime surpass consumption of vitamins by...

Sources and distribution of fresh water around Cape Farewell in 2014 ArchiMer
Benetti, M.; Reverdin, G.; Clarke, J.s.; Tynan, E.; Holliday, N.p.; Torres‐valdes, S.; Lherminier, Pascale; Yashayaev, I..
We investigate the origin of freshwater on the shelves near Cape Farewell (south Greenland) using sections of three hydrographic cruises in May (HUD2014007) and June 2014 (JR302 and Geovide) 2014. We partition the freshwater between meteoric water sources and sea ice melt or brine formation using the δ18O of sea water. The sections illustrate the presence of the East Greenland Coastal Current (EGCC) close to shore east of Cape Farewell. West of Cape Farewell, it partially joins the shelf break, with a weaker near‐surface remnant of the EGCC observed on the shelf southwest and west of Cape Farewell. The EGCC traps the freshest waters close to Greenland, and carries a brine signature below 50m depth. The cruises illustrate a strong increase in meteoric water...

Status and potential of Australian Lates calcarifer culture. ArchiMer
Mackinnon, M.
Lates calcarifer is distributed widely in northern Australia and is important to both commercial and recreational fisheries. There is the research on hatchery production of the species in 1984 and this work is continuing. Hatchery reared fish have been stocked to reservoirs in northern Queensland and have been used in experimental grow-out trials. Fish weaned onto formulated diets by the age of 25 days were reared to marketable size (> 500 g) in freshwater tanks. Despite suboptimal water temperatures the fish reached market size by the age of twelve months. Taste panel analysis showed that the pellet fed fish were of good quality. The sensitivity of growth rates to water temperature was demonstrated in both grow-out trials and reservoir stockings.

Water footprint assessment of the Colombian cocoa production AGRIAMBI
Ortiz-Rodriguez,Oscar O.; Naranjo,Carlos A.; García-Caceres,Rafael G.; Villamizar-Gallardo,Raquel A..
ABSTRACTThe main objective of the present research was to calculate the water footprint of the Colombian cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) production. The evaluation of crop water requirement and irrigation requirement were based on climate, soil and crop conditions in the country. The water requirement estimation was based on data from six municipalities selected for their representativeness of the highest yield, productivity and commercial dynamics of the country. The results show that the Water footprint reached 17,100 m3 t-1. At the province level, the highest record for this parameter was observed in Tolima, with 23,239 m3t-1, while Huila registered the lowest level, with 13,475 m3t-1. Water use per crop unit can be influenced not only by agro-meteorological...
